MEG RYAN FALL

-The Trench Coat Edit:

As the days grow shorter and crisper, it becomes more apparent that fall is right around the corner. I love fall for many reasons but above all, it is the season’s fashion. With the arrival of fall comes New York Fashion Week (taking place from September 9th-14th this year). If you’re wondering what trends and pieces to keep an eye out for fall, we’ll be covering trends all season long! We’re starting out with a timeless, versatile piece á la Meg Ryan in any of her autumn in New York-based romantic comedies: the classic trench coat. Yes, the trench makes its grand reappearance every fall, but we’ll never stop looking for ways to style ours.

THE CLASSIC TRENCH COAT

Whether you like your trench coats oversized, fitted, neutral, or colorful, we promise that the trench will become one of your wardrobe go-tos if you give it the chance. When we think of trench coats, we think Meg Ryan: oversized, cozy, and a pleasing shade of tan or brown for a stroll through Central Park. While we may not be in the midst of a comedic love affair with a lovable cynic and fellow book lover, sporting a great trench coat will never go out of style. So, here’s our quick guide on how to update the classic trench this season:

Styled with Activewear

While it’s easy to associate trench coats as the finishing touch to any business-casual look, I challenge you to re-think it. Yes, it can add a bit of structure to anything you pair with it, but it can also work well with more casual pieces. One of my favorite looks? Trench coats worn over activewear. Not only does it provide its wearer with a more streamlined look, but it can also be worn as an unexpected layering accessory. While looking for your perfect trench, pay special attention to different silhouettes and lengths to better understand how the trench can serve you.

Playing With Colors/Textures

As much as I love Burberry’s classic trench, it’s so much fun to play around with trench coats in unexpected and textures. If you’d like to try a classic, yet fun, approach to stylish the trench, look for one with faux leather finish. You’ll have all the shine and sleekness you can imagine (and may look like the most stylish character from The Matrix without even trying). I love to style my trench by  also popping on a thick black sweater and medium wash jeans just like influencer Emmanuelle Koffi in one October 2020 instagram post.

Oversized Everything

There’s absolutely no denying that oversized pieces have been on the rise lately! While I’m partial to more “classic” silhouettes, experimenting with oversized outerwear is an easy way to add a fun and youthful touch to your fall looks. If you’re loving the oversized look but worry about getting swallowed in all the fabric, invest in a trench that has a cinchabble belt and adjustable sleeves! Your trench should complement your body and your outfit.
