UNDERPAINTING

Contour has always been a makeup technique that has fascinated me, but I haven't mastered the skill yet. Whenever I want to attempt to contour, I run into the fear that I will make a mistake that blending and powder won't fix, and I'll have to take everything off and start over. If you hold similar fears, the makeup trend underpainting might be the solution.

Although underpainting is not a new technique, the makeup trend revival is due to makeup artist Mary Phillips. This trend is to help achieve a more natural look while still adding the beloved sculpture of contouring.

This rising makeup trend is meant to create a glamorous look without the worry of harsh lines and shadows during the blending process. The underpainting trend is when you start with contour and highlighter underneath the foundation.

As you start to contour, the key is to use a cream-based product for a smoother blend. One of my favorite cream contours is Nudestix's Tinted Blur Sculpt Stick. The next step is to add concealer and blend it into the contour. My favorite is Laura Mercier's Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer.

If you prefer to add color and shimmer to your makeup look blush and highlighter will be applied next. Once again, stick with a cream-based product. My go-to is Nudestix's Nudies Blush Stick, shade Naught N Spice. The highlighter that I recommend to add that last little bit of shimmer is Fast-Track Face Stick Highlight by Trish McEvoy.

After applying the base layer, the next step is to put on your foundation. I prefer medium to full coverage for my foundation, Laura Mercier's Flawless Lumière Foundation is one that I highly recommend.

Don't forget to overlay your makeup with a setting powder to finish off the perfect look. I highly suggest Pat McGrath's Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Setting Powder.

Underpainting is a great makeup trend for those that want to practice contour without worrying about ruining their foundation and also create a more natural and even look.
