THE BEAUTY OF CONTRAST

Contrast is a fashion trend that will never go out of style. It's what makes fashion interesting and has the potential to elevate every look.

When we think of contrast, the first thing that probably comes to mind is black and white. While contrasting colors is an extremely fun styling method, there is so much more to contrast than what meets the eye. Let's dive in.

Contrasting Aesthetics

Probably the most prominent trend surfacing within the past year is the idea of pairing two aesthetics that don’t belong together. There are many different aesthetics to choose from, such as grunge, balletcore, sporty, eclectic, chic, modest, business casual, cottage-core, boho, and streetwear. What if we didn't have to choose just one? Pairing two opposite aesthetics is a huge emerging trend that fashion influencers and celebrities are adopting to add interest and excitement to their style. An easy way to incorporate this into your style is by using the "Wrong-Shoe Theory" coined by stylist and wardrobe consultant Allison Bornstein. This movement encourages the mixing of aesthetics by pairing one aesthetic's shoes with another aesthetic's outfit. Some examples include pairing running shoes with a dress, ballet flats with a sports jersey, and work boots with a pantsuit.

Contrasting Patterns

To embrace maximalism, try mixing patterns that don't necessarily seem to match. This adds excitement, youthfulness, exuberance, and fun to an otherwise dull outfit. Instead of sticking to what's "safe," push yourself to experiment with pattern combinations that you normally wouldn't consider pairing together.

Contrasting Textures

Finally, textures. If bright-colored patterns and maximalism aren't your thing, but you still want to play with the idea of contrast, try mixing textures. This can go hand-in-hand with mixing aesthetics unintentionally due to some fabrics belonging to certain aesthetics, but it doesn't always have to. Whether or not you are experimenting with different aesthetics, pairing unusual textures together can create dimension and versatility within every outfit.
