THE VIEW LAKESIDE

A lake is a landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.
— Henry David Thoreau

Going home for the holidays means several different things to me. For starters, I know the kitchen pantry is going to be stocked with glass Tupperware, each filled to the absolute brim with failed cookie turnouts. My poor father will take one for the team and slowly work his way through them, but the entire family will recognize that those goods will last past New Year’s. Second, I know that I will have plenty of downtime to readjust to my surroundings and remind myself of which bars I need to avoid at all costs. Third, during my reacquaintance period, I will need to take a canoe and a couple of blankets lakeside.

A “Chill” Look

The game plan for outfits requires bundling. Being near a large body of water is sure to leave you feeling somewhat colder than you would like with the already chilly temperatures of mid-December, so do not skimp on the coverings. Embrace your viral “cozy era” aesthetic, and break out the fleece-lined leggings, the calf-high socks, and the layerable long-sleeves. For added warmth, throw on a pullover or an oversized hoodie; both are necessities for any lakeside lounger, but they also make for great basic winter wear.

Blanket Bedecked

Trust me, you will be glad you brought blankets. They will compliment your UGGs perfectly, and give you that optional bit of insulation. Although you can never go wrong with a faux fur or woven throw, this season’s quilt-love trend is something we cannot back enough.

Your Added Bonus

Make it a group date, and bring along your favorite thermos. Pack a couple of festive tumbler mugs in your travel bag, and prepare for a day of rest and relaxation. If you are looking for a wholesome stocking stuffer recommendation, we’ve added a few of our favorite woodland scents that are sure to bring you back to the great outdoors long after the holiday season.

EXPLORE VANITY STORIES

Abigail Kussow

Somewhere between driving forty-eight minutes to get to the nearest Sephora, and getting a degree in Anthropology, I found myself–-as many of us do– utterly dissatisfied with where I was headed. I would pick up extra hours at the university library because it gave me access to the latest issues Condé Nast had to offer, and I was guilty of the cardinal sin of wearing my favorite pair of sling-back mules in the laboratory. When the novelty of being in academia wore off, I clung to the joy I found in the novels of Joan Didion, and clips of fashion week that trickled down my social media feeds. Hi, I’m Abigail, and like my fellow VS authors, clean beauty and writing are part of the lifestyle. I refuse to divorce myself from monochrome minimalism and subtle plum lipstick. I’m a fervent believer that mascara should be layered on top and bottom. Shoes are just as important as your manicure, and perfume is best when it doesn’t crowd the room. I am the #caférecluse on her 2009-2012 Rachel McAdams aesthetic binge, and I wear it well.
