WE’RE WEARING OUR HEADBANDS AGAIN

Headbands are back which can only mean one thing: preppy, old-money Hamptons core is about to be #1 on the top trending charts come January. Is it the Gossip Girl resurgence, the need to cover our ears from the blistering cold, or just another one of the ghosts from the mid-2000s past? Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure: we want these accessories snuggling our skulls before the snow melts.

Wide-Stretch Takeover

The media algorithms of this past month really want us to fall in love with the hairline wide band look, and I want to relay the message that it does not need to be working this hard. It checks all of our boxes: it completes a quick on-trend athleisure hairstyle, it’s perfect for the last-minute shopping outing, and it allows us to stretch the hair washing range to an extra day. It’s the clean girl’s must-have for Winter, and it was born to be worn with this season’s all-star, the cropped puffer, and the lulu long-sleeve pairing.

Our Crowning Glory

The padded band earned its place as last year’s best-supporting actor thanks to the likes of Chrissy Teigen, Keke Palmer, and the ultimate royal “It” girl, Princess Kate. So, why are we showing love to it at the end of 2022? Two words, one icon: Eric Daman, a.k.a. the stylist and costume designer behind the cross-generational smash tv show(s), Gossip Girl. Although the statement headpiece has been spotted gracing the tops of several characters throughout the reboot’s ongoing run, like its predecessor, the Upper East Side headband picks favorites. As elitist ribbon wraps were for Blair Waldorf, so too are the chunky headbands for Monet de Haan.

All Tied Up

Whether you are feeling bohemian or coquettish, a tied scarf, ribbon, or band may be the boost you were looking for to elevate your outfit of the day. Pro tip: to avoid getting swallowed by the headwear, make volume your friend. Dimensional curls or a back-combed low bun work well to keep the accessory from going rogue.

EXPLORE VANITY STORIES

Abigail Kussow

Somewhere between driving forty-eight minutes to get to the nearest Sephora, and getting a degree in Anthropology, I found myself–-as many of us do– utterly dissatisfied with where I was headed. I would pick up extra hours at the university library because it gave me access to the latest issues Condé Nast had to offer, and I was guilty of the cardinal sin of wearing my favorite pair of sling-back mules in the laboratory. When the novelty of being in academia wore off, I clung to the joy I found in the novels of Joan Didion, and clips of fashion week that trickled down my social media feeds. Hi, I’m Abigail, and like my fellow VS authors, clean beauty and writing are part of the lifestyle. I refuse to divorce myself from monochrome minimalism and subtle plum lipstick. I’m a fervent believer that mascara should be layered on top and bottom. Shoes are just as important as your manicure, and perfume is best when it doesn’t crowd the room. I am the #caférecluse on her 2009-2012 Rachel McAdams aesthetic binge, and I wear it well.
