WEST COAST: HIDDEN GEMS
Move over, San Diego and Los Angeles. We’re headed up the coast. Although we may be familiar with the metropolitan areas of the West Coast, especially the ones known for their spring break experiences, there is so much more to see in these states. For anyone craving a weekend or a full vacation without the scary traffic we associate with our favorite West Coast spots, these hidden locations are perfect.
Dana Point, California
Stock up on sunscreen before you go to this beachy paradise. Located in Southern Orange County with a small population, Dana Point is the perfect place to unwind, smell the sea and find waves to surf all year long. Don’t get stuck on the beach, though, even if there is whale watching and concert cruises on the harbor.
Check out the Dana Point Falls right after a hard rain to see the picturesque sight, which will make you feel like you’ve left the country to a tropical oasis. If you make the trek and find the right opportunity, you won’t forget seeing the gorgeous waterfall. If you’re not able to see it, though, there are plenty of other relaxing experiences in Dana Point. From the vibrant farmers market to the golf courses, there’s something for everyone.
If you’re interested in combining your trip to see two gorgeous places in one day, Dana Point offers one hour ferry trips to Catalina Island. Its tranquility and charm will only add to the vacation of your dreams.
Solvang, California
If you want to walk through a literal fairytale, there’s no place like Solvang. The quaint village in Santa Ynez Valley will instantly transport you to Denmark with its wine tastings in front of windmills, European bakeries and colorful architecture. Explore the museum of history and art, attend Han Christian Andersen’s birthday party on April 2 and watch a show at the festival theater.
Solvang is the perfect weekend away from home. Make sure to bring your friends and take plenty of photographs while you ride bikes through the “Danish Capital of America.”
Natural Bridges Cove, Oregon
We love natural wonders here at Vanity Stories, and Natural Bridges Cove is no exception. Although you are probably familiar with the area if you’re from Oregon, anyone who doesn’t know the hiking route around the Samuel H Boardman Scenic Corridor to this secluded close-up of waves crashing against cliffs are in for a lovely surprise.
The hike itself will make you want to bring your boots and a rain jacket (just in case), but you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and appealing to your sense of adventure the whole time. Try to get out there early so you can watch the sunrise glimmering and listen to the sounds of the sea without any distractions.
The Oregon Garden
Yes, I’m recommending visiting a botanical garden. Although this may seem a bit strange for vacation, especially if you’re not someone who loves stopping to smell the roses, this breathtaking array of flowers and water displays is well worth it. Located in Silverton, the Oregon Garden is not your typical few acres of freshly cut grass with a few flowers in between.
This floral sanctuary holds more than 20 gardens with specialized themes over 80 acres of land, which immerses you in nature. If you’re looking for a place to walk around and feel stress leave your body, this is the perfect day trip or spontaneous stop for you.
Hoh Rainforest, Washington
If you’re prepared to walk through mud to go on an adventure, the Hoh Rainforest on the west side of the Olympic National Park is truly a sight to behold. There’s miles of moss, ferns and trails leading through idyllic greenery. You may even spot some wildlife, such as elk and bears, while you’re looking for a place to camp (if you’re interested in staying overnight). Regardless, you’ll see awe-inspiring trees and a flourishing, overgrown forest ground like you’ve never seen before.
The Hoh Rainforest is a magical landscape that exudes solitude and quiet, but you better get there before the heavy rainfall.
The Palouse, Washington
Situated on the border of Washington and Idaho, the Palouse is practically begging to be visited and photographed. The rolling hills and vast fields solidify this place as one of Washington State’s fascinating wonders, especially when we take the shifting colors and vibrancy from season to season into account.
The panoramic views and rural atmosphere surrounding the Palouse make it the perfect destination for a quick getaway. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a painting while gazing upon this marvel.
All of these environments will contribute to a vacation that you won’t easily forget. If you choose the paths less traveled and engage in new experiences, you’re bound to have some great stories. So, get out there and create new memories that will last a lifetime.
